James Mackenzie

Dating back to the 15th century, The Pipe and Glass stands on the site of the original gatehouse to Dalton Park, still the home of Lord Hotham. The inn is committed to sourcing as much local and seasonal produce as possible with first and foremost it being quality that counts. James and future wife Kate took over the pub in 2006. It was tired and unloved and took every last penny they had to refurbish the place. Since then the inn has won a string of accolades, being awarded East Yorkshire's first and only Michelin Star in 2010, and in 2012 being made Michelin's Pub of the Year.

James is also the current Yorkshire Life magazine chef of the year and Deliciously Yorkshire champion. From day one James and Kate's philosophy has been to serve great food that has true personality, offering the best Yorkshire hospitality and providing customers with what they want so they keep coming back time after time. James says great food is all about the simple things done well, and understanding what each individual producer and supplier is capable of is a vital aspect of being a chef. "If you have great produce and treat it with respect, the quality shines through and the taste will be at its best," he says.
